Voice cloning, explained and compared
We compare voice cloning tools on what you can check — price, license and cloning limits — and publish side-by-side audio as we record it. Rankings are not bought.
What to listen for in a voice clone
- 01
Breath and pauses
Real speakers breathe and pause mid-sentence. A clone that never pauses, or pauses at every comma, sounds read rather than spoken.
- 02
Sustained emotion
Most clones manage one neutral sentence. The test is 15 seconds of the same emotion without drifting back to a flat read.
- 03
Hard consonants
Listen for p, b and t sounds. Smeared or over-sharp plosives are the quickest giveaway of a synthetic voice.
How voice cloning works
- 01
Upload a sample
A short clip of clean speech is enough for instant cloning. No studio and no special mic — a phone recording in a quiet room works.
- 02
Build the voice
The model picks up tone, pacing and accent, not just pitch. Instant clones are ready in moments; higher-fidelity "professional" clones need much more audio and a training period.
- 03
Type and export
Type any text, choose a language and download the audio. Commercial rights depend on the tool and the plan — check the license before you publish.
Questions
Is voice cloning legal?
It depends on whose voice and where you are. Cloning your own voice is fine in most places. Cloning someone else without written permission is where the risk starts: US states have right-of-publicity laws, and some, such as Tennessee with its ELVIS Act, now name AI-generated voices explicitly. This is a starting point, not legal advice.
Do I need a good microphone?
No. Clean matters more than expensive: one speaker, no background music, no echo. A phone held about 20 cm away in a quiet room beats a studio take with room reverb.
What does voice cloning actually cost?
Free tiers exist but usually exclude commercial use. On 2026-10-26 the entry paid plans we checked were $6/mo for ElevenLabs Starter and $11/mo billed annually for Fish Audio Plus; Murf's self-serve plans don't include cloning. We keep a current table on the alternatives page.
